Course Description

The US Supreme Court has clearly stated what most prosecutors do not understand. From Tennessee v. Gardner in 1985 to Tahlequah, OK v. Bond in 2021, supervisor/administrators will have legal leverage to protect the officer and educate prosecutors on this issue.

This 8-hour course prepares the supervisor/administrator in the response to an officer involved shooting.

Topics discussed include:

  • Supreme Court case law
  • The body’s response
  • The psychological changes response to the during and the aftermath
  • The investigation (internal and external)
  • Practices to ensure accurate interviews
  • Body cameras (weaknesses and when to review)
  • Media releases
  • Best practices to combat prosecutors who are seeking political gain in shootings rather than seeking the truth
  • Best practices for the internal investigation and when to conduct these interviews.
  • Physical evidence collected
  • Drug testing of the office
  • Days off and administrative leave
  • The report
  • The agency’s response via new and social media
