Course Description

Within the conduct of the interview, verbal communication exists on three levels:

  1. What the interviewee said
  2. What the interviewee wanted to say
  3. What the interviewer heard and processed

The interviewing goal is for the interviewer to move level three as close to level one as possible. However, within the narrative, there are language features, which, to the informed and attentive interviewer, can provide a conduit into a deeper understanding of the mindset of the interviewee. Having gained this insight, the interviewer can incorporate the awareness into the conduct of the interview, increasing the opportunity for a positive interview outcome.

This session utilizes related materials, previously recorded interviews, and recorded lectures to address the concept. Given a video or audio recording of an interview, the participant will:

  • Define the language elements presented
  • Identify the elements from interviewee’s narrative
  • Develop subsequent amplifying questions.
