Course Description

Experience woodland plant life as never before in this fun field class.  You will learn to identify various plants, native herbs, bark, leaves, twigs, fruit, and trees, paying special attention to which of these may be worthy of harvesting as herbs, food sources, or other beneficial uses, also known as “wildcrafting.” We will walk through wooded areas at a leisurely pace with frequent stops so please wear comfortable shoes, dress accordingly, and bring water with you. The class will be held, rain or shine.

Join our gardening guru, David Goforth, for a fun morning of learning at Lomax Research and Education Farm. David has been a life-long farmer. He attended North Carolina State University to earn his BS and Master of Horticultural Science and in addition to managing his own farm, he has spent his career educating our community about local agriculture through his work as a teacher, extension agent and horticulture consultant for local farms.

*The Elma C. Lomax Research and Education Farm (Lomax) is a certified organic farm located in Concord, NC. Launched in 2009 by the Cabarrus County government and Cooperative Extension as a training ground for new farmers, the farm has evolved into a research and education farm managed by Carolina Farm Stewardship Association.
