Course Description

Internal Affairs Investigations- Promoting Professional Standards is designed for chiefs, commanders, supervisors and internal affairs/professional standards unit managers and investigators who are central to the administrative investigative process.

The course is designed to orient experienced law enforcement officers and related personnel to the unique investigative and legal aspects of conducting internal affairs investigations, both administrative and criminal.  

This class discusses:

  • The legal and operational necessities of administrative investigations, including understanding the critical importance of establishing an effective complaint acceptance process
  • Understanding the difference between rules of engagement for administrative and criminal investigations
  • Understanding the due process rights of public employees including law enforcement officers and the procedural requirements of the internal investigations
  • Assess the value of an agency’s early warning/identification process to proactively identify and address potential problems
  • Identifying recent legal decisions affecting internal affairs investigations
