CJC-5010H - Use of Force Management for Officers: Resister Training
Course Description
The use of Force Management for Officers: Resister Training course is designed for officers and others in the field.
This is a practical course in applying the "Four Elements of Reasonable Force" which are force knowledge, skills, decision-making and documentation. All these elements must be at a minimum level of proficiency in order to be effective and prove any use of force was reasonable.
This course provides a comprehensive review of force justification and critical skills to address passive (defensive), active (offensive), and deadly resistance. This course reinforces de-escalation skills without decreasing officer safety. Force decision-making processes are given and practiced giving officers confidence and understanding for the need to have fast, simple, and adaptable decision-making that works with the stress response. It is not enough for an officer to have good knowledge, skills, make a reasonable decision and use reasonable force. If he/she can't document the incident with sufficient clarity and detail, then the risk of liability is not reduced. This course provides a process for officers to know if their force report contains sufficient detail to prove reasonableness no matter how many uses of force were used. It also provides a basis to make testifying and depositions consistent even years later.
Note: This course has practical exercises and requires access to a multipurpose space. Duty belts with training weapons (Red-guns, Inert/empty pepper spray cannisters, inert/empty TASER cartridge, baton, flashlight).
