Course Description

While informants can be the lifeblood of narcotic investigations, they are also one of the greatest dangers.  Improper informant management can lead to dismissed cases, officer dismissals and even criminal charges against police.  This 1-day advance class gives Supervisors the necessary tools to assist and direct their officers when dealing with Informants.  Instruction includes identifying proper Informant documentation, proper management of Informants, with an emphasis on officer liability and safety.  Students will learn how to properly debrief and document informant interactions and court preparation.  The following blocks of instruction are included: 

  • Informants vs. Sources of Information
  • Informant Identification and Documentation
  • Informant vs Officer Roles

Upon completion of this class, students will be able to:

  • Recognize the liabilities associated with informant utilization
  • Establish guidelines for Officers to follow when utilizing Informants
  • Understand the necessities of thorough and proper informant documentation
