Course Description

This hands-on course focuses on issues of the promotional process in law enforcement agencies. Students will participate in exercises on how to properly, and legally create and administer the promotional process in their agency.

Topics covered are:

• What an assessment center is & how to design it
• How to handle legal issues and the process in promotions
• How to develop a valid written examination
• Process objectives
• Advantages and disadvantages of an oral review board and psychological testing
• Importance of seniority vs. education and training in the process
• Using outside persons to evaluate your personnel for promotions
• The use of past evaluations in the process
• How to design and use promotional potential rating forms in the selection of the right people for promotions
